Tin cans back in 1810 were opened by rock; chisels ;or knives. It wasn't until 50 years later that the butterfly opener was patented. This was the hand held can opener that had the butterfly designed turner on it to guide the cutting edge.
In 1931 the first electric can opener was invented. Later in 1950's and 60's a larger variety of can openers were available by choice.
