Make sure to research the seller and find out as much as you can about where the car came from and its history. Have the seller put in writing the condition of the car and note any problems, dents, or wreck history the car may have.

Keep hard copies of all emails and transactions during the purchase. If there is a discrepancy in the car's appearance or condition, document it with photographs.
