Depression has been known to cause much confusion in the world. Not only do individual's have a hard time in describing the way they feel , they also find it hard to be properly diagnosed. Doctors often make a diagnosis of depression after they have assessed the severity of one's low mood, and the symptoms and duration of one's problem.

Depression is treatable. You should seek attention from your medical doctor or therapist. There are some things one can do for oneself or to help another when suffering with depression. One sure thing you can't do is, "Pull Yourself Together." You may think you can or should be able to do so. There are other individual's that may think the same thing.

If you have ever experienced one episode of depression , you stand a greater risk of experiencing another in the future. There is a small percentage that may even experience an episode of depression known as a bipolar disorder. This is commonly known as manic depression.

You may wonder who gets depressed? You may find it interesting to know that between 5 to 10% of the population suffers from depression at some time in one's life. Over your lifetime you have a 20% chance of suffering from an episode of depression. It has been determined that women are more likely to suffer from depression than men. Men and women are equally affected when it come to bipolar disorder.

There is no particular personality type that stands a greater risk than another. However there have been risk factors such as the inherited factors from parents or grandparents, which have suffered from depression at some point in their life. Also there are the non-genetic factors such as death of a parent when one was young.

It is not clear what causes depression. Some people are found to be more vulnerable than others. It is not clear whether genes or one's early life experiences plays a role in one becoming depressed. Often stressful situations in one's life can trigger depression. Physical illnesses ; drug treatments; and recreational drugs have been known to trigger depression.

With it being so hard to identify a cause in so many people, that can also be distressing for one who wants to know the reason why one is ill. For no apparent reason, depression can strike. It has been proven that many definite changes take place in one's brain when one becomes depressed.
