One of the benefits of fishing is it can teach you how to be a decisive person. You've got to pick the right reel and make sure it's a set up you can use easily. Then there is the fishing line. The weight and type of line is very important to your success. You've got to find a good spot, learn what kind of fish are there and make a judgment call about the best times, places and ways to catch them. When all this is done, what's left? More decisions! Now you have to pick bait. There are advantages and disadvantages to this decision, so it's best to understand all varieties.

Live Bait

It makes a certain amount of sense that if fish live in the lake all the time eating minnows or things that they would certainly want to swallow one floating in the water. However, there are some things to know about live bait. First, what type of bait is best for your area? A minnow doesn't do much good in a stocked lake with no natural supply, and a worm won't be much help in the ocean where worms usually don't float around the water. Be sure your bait matches the type of water and fish you are trying to catch. Live bait requires upkeep, and unless you have tons of time for your fishing, usually should be bought from a bait shop, while you're picking up your license. Live bait is harder for kids (and some adults) to get on the hook and keep on the hook, and has a smell to it that novice anglers and kids might not prefer. Still, for a good catch, nothing beats appealing to a prey's natural appetites.

Lures

For anglers who want to continuously cast and not "bobber watch" all day long, lures offer a special opportunity to add a little sport into their fishing. There are many "lure enthusiasts" who not only use lures, but make a hobby out of tying their own. Another advantage of lures is the ability to use a hook without barbs so fish can be released without significant trauma. Fish in different areas respond differently to colors, swivel types and water patterns. Lures go by quickly and have no smell so your fish would be taking it in largely out of curiosity. This makes the science of lures more interesting but also less assured.

Electronic fishing bait

The world of animatronics has invaded one of America's oldest forms of recreation and food provision. Electronic minnows, works and lures now exist that swim like live bait and imitate perfectly the movement of the real thing, but offer the barb-less hooks and easy storage of lures. There are even oils that can be put on the lures to make the smell like the projected bait. The only downside to the bait is that it is expensive, and can be easily lost in the water by the yank of a strong fish on a weak line, or broken if casted into a tree by accident.

Whether you want to dig for worms, tie a lure or put a digital imitation at the end of your line, the result is still the same. Hours of waiting, reeling and hope will add up to a day of enjoyment, and a good catch for fun.
