Washers: Breaking Away From The Drudgery Of Washing

Soak, swab, scrub, rub, brush, scour, wash rinse and hang; these are just a few of the many verbs that depict the job of washing clothes and already they are a handful. Washing takes a lot of time and effort which is probably why it usually tops the list of dreaded household chores.

Albeit thanks to brilliant minds behind modern technology, we can probably say goodbye to all the hassle and bustle that the washing ordeal gives us. Gone are the days when you have to toil and sweat over a bundle of sheets, shirts and what-have-you, what with the introduction of washers to the domestic world.

Like traditional hand washing, washers or washing machines make use of water as the prime cleaning solution into getting all the dirt, grime and stains from sheets and clothing. Compared to conventional washing, operating a washer is fairly simple.

First step is determining the load of your wash depending on how many clothes and sheets you have on hand. Then determine the water temperature for your wash and rinse cycles. Most washers give you the choice to go for cold or warm temperature or even both. Some clothes are pretty delicate especially the knitted and lace variety, so check the rotating options as well. You also have the preference of setting the time frame for your washing cycles.

Sets are measured in minutes. Last but not the least you should not forget to separate your colors from your whites. As convenient and practical an appliance as it may, the washing machine does not have this facet and therefore incapable of telling one from the other.

There are basically two main types of washing machines, the top loader and the front loader. In top loading washers makes use of a vast tub that purposely holds in the water. Ensconced within the tub is a vertically-mounted basket with an agitator shaped like a propeller centered in the bottom.

The basket is further perforated with small holes to enable the water to freely pass through to and from the tub. Clothes are placed in the basket and spins around the agitator paddles during the cycle. A big load is usually not recommended when using this type of washer as there is a tendency that the agitator may not be able to cope with the stack.

The clothes may be left unwashed, just floating on the surface and excluded from the circulation process. The agitator paddles may not also be as friendly as they look and can damage some delicate fabric, so choosing what goes in the machine should be done with caution and care.

Conversely, in front loading washing machines, the basket and the tub are positioned horizontally. Loading is then done through a door located in the front of the appliance, thus the name. The swirl and spins of the machine is not only manipulated by the rotating motion of the cylinder but with the aid of gravity as well. This action allows all the clothes to be soaked and submerged in water and detergent for a uniform wash. Because of this, less water and less soap is also needed.
