Growing and cultivating a home garden can cause you a foot and an arm if you are not careful. If you do not know already, the prices and costs of gardening may take the wind out of your sails and leave you flabbergasted. But do not drown in sorrow and forget about your gardening fantasies just yet, here are a few tips that can save you a lot of money for another rainy day.

When you are purchasing your garden supplies, particularly your seeds, it is advisable that you buy only in small quantities. Just like what mom taught you on the dinner table, only get what you need. Getting extra seeds that will no more than gather dust in your shed is like pouring your money down the drain.

It is also best that you get your home garden from nearby sources. Like plants, home garden suppliers and vendors may be spurting in your local neighborhood and more on the internet. The latter group may attract you to low prices, great packages and deals however you should also consider that you will be shelling out for extra fees like shipping and freight charges. So when canvassing and comparing prices and costs, be sure to consider the total expense instead of the individual item price tags.

It is also more advantageous if you purchase your heavy substances like soil, animal manure, green sand and other ingredients of organic fertilizers from local sources. Remember, the heavier the item, the higher the shipping costs would be.

The saying is still true; "the best things in life are free." Be always on the lookout for sources that come at no cost at all. One good idea is swapping seedling, plants and other materials with your gardening friends. Barters work win-win. You get something you need while your ally gets something that she needs as well. A plus is you get to establish and nurture friendships and acquaintances too.

Another good idea is to go for shrubs and plants that naturally grow in your neighborhood or locale. You may be surprised to find the most beautiful wildflowers inconspicuously at the next street corner. When it comes to fertilizers, organic is the recommended choice. One's garbage can be another man's treasure. Get the most benefit from your trash; you may include your neighbor's as well. Waste does not only mean compost but it could also include other things like an old wooden ladder or steel grates.

Time your purchases. Flowers and plants come in seasons and their prices fluctuate correspondingly as well. Being wary of this fact can give you savings on a particular flowering shrub which could cost around $30 dollars during March and whose price drops down to half at $15 come November. Autumn is usually a great season to get the best deals from plant sales.

If you are a novice at gardening and are a little hesitant to make your initial holes for planting those seeds, trees or shrubs, it is likely that you may settle for paying the extra planting charge. There are no guaranties that your plant will grow when the nursery makes the planting. It is recommended that you do the task yourself because this not only saves you money but you get to learn from the hands-on experience. That is extremely important especially if you want to continue nourishing your home garden yourself. Planting is fairly easy. If you get confused, you can always get instructions from the nursery.
