Part of what makes sports collectibles and memorabilia so interesting is the fact that people can find them in some of the strangest and out of the way places. Sports collectibles and sports memorabilia are fun items to amass over a lifetime and to own the rarest items in the sports collectibles world is a feat that very few people have the opportunity to do. Locating those items will require finesse and tenacity because people rarely put those types of collectibles up for sale.

Some families will routinely visit the local flea market to browse through the sports collectibles that are on display in shops. While gazing at these items, the sports collector will also be intent on going down each aisle and inspecting shops that have household goods in them or those items that are displayed in other stores. To a vigilant collector, a rare sport collectible might be in plain view but the true value of the item will not be known to the seller of that piece of antiquity.

When sports collector's visit an auction house they usually know which sports collectibles are being sold at auction and which day they will be placed on the auction block. These collectors are usually notified through regular or email notification methods because they have bought from the auction house on an earlier auction event. Locating the items up for auction is rather easy because the auction house will assign a number to the item and list the lot number on the auction sheet.

There are times when a sports memorabilia collector will have to monitor the number of items that remain in a collection. Sports posters are very collectible but are easily damaged over time if a sheet of glass and a sturdy frame does not protect them. Since most sports posters are signed by the athlete and numbered, it is easy to create a tracking system for those that are sold at retail shops across the nation. A collector can track these numbers on their own and have a good idea of what a sport collectible such as posters will worth if it is sold.

Locating some sports collectibles will be relatively simple because the collectible would be turned over to the athlete that caught it in a game or earned the title as Most Valuable Player. Sports collectors can assume that the item remains in the possession of that player because these items are news worthy and any sale of such item would be announced through an article in the daily newspaper. Some people locate newspapers, which have sports event results in color on the front page and these items are easy to locate in the future because the collector saved them.

Some people locate sports collectibles at the sports events held in their hometowns. The collectible item might be part of the locker room decor and has hung on the walls for many years. Other people find sports collectibles on the football field before, during and after the game, and can reap a piece of that collectible when fans tear down the goal posts at the end of a football game.
