Drums may be large, bulky instruments but there is a reason why they are not absent in a musical band. In the movie, "That thing you do," it was the drums and the drummer which made the band rise to fame. Drums are an essential instrument in a musical performance. They are sometimes known as the skeleton instrument of a band. This may be so because drums add that extra oomph and the bangs give that dramatic effect that always gets the audience attention. It is the beat of the drums that usually gets the listeners on their hands and feet, either by clapping, snapping their fingers, tapping their feet or stepping up to the dance floor in tune with the music produced by the drums and cymbals of the set.

When shopping for a drum set, the experts advise that you should always have a sound check for every drum in every store you visit. This may sound absurd for some people, and some individuals may be too shy to try their hand at it afraid that they might make a ruckus inside the music store. Albeit, one should keep in mind that people shopping in such a store should know that they are inside a music store and should thus expect that there should be music going around. A string test or a bang on the cymbals or two should not come as a surprise. A sound test is important because it is said that a simple hit on the drums can mean a big difference to a prospective buyer. The sound, as some people believe, is like telling the buyer whether the drum is for him or not. Whether you believe this myth is up to you. Here are however, more factual tips that you can use in your drum set shopping.

There are a lot of different drums that make up the set so the first thing that you must know is to learn how to recognize and identify these parts. For beginners, a drum set may include the following: a snare drum and its snare stand, a kick drum, a kick pedal, a drum throne, a mounted tom, a hi-hat stand, a crash cymbal, hi-hat cymbals and of course, a sturdy pair of drum sticks.

The shells of the drums are a thing to consider as the woods used can affect the sound. For better quality, costlier woods are more often used, while the drum set kits for beginners are usually made up of basswood or mahogany. Another thing to look into is the hardware. The hardware is the stand that keeps the drums together. It is the bones of the frame which make sure that the drums and the cymbals are in place. It is critical that your drum sets hardware is strong and durable as these not only need to support the weight of the drums but they also have to take in the beating that goes with playing the instrument. You may also want to get a good drum seat. So you can sit comfortably and play with your new drum set up to your heart's content.
