Many areas of the country have low income residents that need to be educated on the type of legal services that are available to them. There have been many neighborhoods that have been equipped with residential legal services offices that serve a primary purpose of educating residents on all areas of law that are germane to the State in which they reside.

Some of the helpful things that residents can learn are provided at no charge and any actual legal services are provided at a very nominal charge that is rated on the amount of income that a family earns over the course of a year. The neighborhood legal services information will keep residents informed on changes that occur to various housing laws and help them identify various forms of discrimination.

Some residents in a low income community might not know how to deal with an eviction and need to be advised of their rights under the law. Some families might need to receive legal advice on how to handle a domestic abuse issue and know ahead of time what the removal of a spouse from the home might affect the families right to welfare benefits. A residential legal services specialist can provide answers to these questions and more.

Many other benefits are available through the residential legal services offices. Residents can obtain a wide variety of materials pertaining to family law. Some families will need powers of attorney for heath care providers or need some legal representation in court for a child custody fight. There are many lawyers that are willing to volunteer a certain amount of their time to provide legal help on a pro bono basis and these lawyers are fully qualified to represent them in a court of law.

The quality of life has improved dramatically for some people that live in low income housing projects. They have been thoroughly educated on many legal matters that might come to pass and know the limits to the amount of help that is available to them from State and local government agencies. Some welfare recipients have used the legal services training on poverty laws as a motivational tool to learn a trade.

Through the knowledge gained with the help of legal services office personnel, people have been able to deal with substandard housing conditions and take a stand in court against a landlord that refuses to make repairs. The residents in low income housing areas are now armed with enough information to make all types of improvements in their life through legal methods.
