Many indoor pets will escape through the back door when a pet owner is watering plants on the porch or fetching the mail from the mailbox. Pet owners that are vigilant will retrieve the pet before it wanders off but in most cases, the pets curiosity will cause the homeowner great heart ache because the pet gets lost before the pet owner can pick the animal up and take it back into the house. Cats love to roam outdoors, especially if it is a sunny day. The lure of the outdoors can make finding lost pets a very difficult task if the pet owner is not prepared.

Many pet adoption centers have taken steps to ensure that lost pets are returned quickly and safely. Finding lost pets is easy because the pet adoption center had a microchip installed under the skin of the pet before it left the adoption facility. Lost pets are easy to track and locate because the tracking system can pinpoint the location of the pet in seconds. The microchip tracking devices are not noticeable and are firmly attached to the animal. They cannot be knocked off by branches or chewed because they are injected on the back of the neck where pets cannot reach.

Other methods for finding lost pets will require a little leg work. Pet owners are often tasked with posting signs on major thoroughfares close to where they live, hoping that a passerby will call the telephone number and tell them where the pet is located. Some city ordinances will prohibit posting on private property or on private streets, but pet owners are sure to find property owners that are willing to let pet owners advertise on their property when they are searching for a lost pet.

Animal control specialists are often dispatched to residential neighborhoods by landowners who report stray dogs or cat on the property. These humane pet workers will often capture the animal and check the neck region to see if it is wearing an identification collar. If an address is listed on a metal pet tag around the neck, the animal control specialist will drive to that location and return the lost pet to the owner. Most animal control agents will help pet owners in finding lost pets by keeping a watchful eye out when they are driving through neighborhoods.

Finding lost pets that have been picked up by animal control specialist could prove to be a very difficult task. Some pets wander out of the neighborhood and travel to parts of town that the pet owner would never dream of looking for their pet. Every city and county animal control society could have several types of animal shelters and care centers that a pet could be taken to after capture. Some pet centers limit the occupants to a certain size and this might be a factor for the pet owner to use when finding lost pets.

It is very helpful if the pet owner has several photographs of the pet on hand when they begin searching for lost pets. Some photographs might give a good image of a birth mark that will jog some people's memory. The photographs help pet owners find lost pets because these pictures can be placed on posters and spread throughout surrounding neighborhoods very quickly if the owner has access to a copier. Those photographs could also be posted on pet recovery sites to let people know that the pet is missing and where it was last seen in a certain town.
